Oman's population reached 4.4 million by mid-2016, marking an increase of 1.1 million over the population in 2011. Omani population increased by about 21% while expatriate population rose by 55%, according to an update released by the (NCSI).
Males formed 50.5% of the Omani population. Nationals aged less than 29 years formed the largest segment of the Omani population with a share of 65%. Among Omanis aged 65 years and over, there were about 98 males per 100 females, while in the age group 15 to 64 years there were 101 males for every 100 females.
In terms of dependency among Omanis, for every 100 people of working age there were 68 adult dependents, as against 61 children dependents for every 100 people of working age. Old-age dependency was low with just 7 elderly dependents for every 100 people of working age. Among expatriates, there were 5.2 adult dependents per 100 people of working age, whereas there were 4.7 children dependents per 100 people of working age. Males formed 65% of Oman's total population. There were 102 Omani males for 100 female Omanis, compared with 510 male expatriates per 100 female expatriates.
Indians formed about 39% of the total arrivals, followed by Bangladeshis at 34%, and Pakistanis at 13% of the total expatriates. There were 645 Indian males per 100 Indian females, while there were 1661 Bangladeshi males per 100 female Bangladeshis in Oman.
Muscat is the most densely populated governorate with 345 inhabitants per square kilometer. Dhofar and Central governorates constituted about 59% of the total area of the Sultanate, but is home to only 11% of its population, logging a population density of about three people per square kilometer.
