Traffic accidents in the Sultanate registered a significant 30.8% drop in March compared with figures for the same month last year, wth injuries falling by 21.8% to 236, and fatalities declining by 1.2% to 57, says the latest report on traffic mishaps published by the (NCSI).
However, compared to February, the number of injuries and deaths on the road was higher in March, with a total of 207 injuries and 45 deaths recorded in February. Meanwhile, the total number of accidents on the Sultanate's roads last year stood at 6,279, with 3,624 injuries and 675 deaths. The report further notes that the number of Omani nationals who died in road mishaps increased 3.7% to 40 in March compared with same month of last year, while logging a 19.1% drop in injuries suffered by nationals at 194. Omani female fatalities dropped by 21.7% to 5, while male deaths increased by 10.6 % to 35. Injuries sustained by Omani females declined 30.1% to 34 in March, while the drop was 15% among Omani males at 160.
In the case of expatriates, there had been a 29.7% fall in injuries at 42. Gender wise, only a single female expatriate got injured in accidents in March. In contrast, there were 41 male injuries in March, which however marked a fall of nearly 25% over figures for the same month last year. The number of expatriates who lost their lives in accidents in March logged a fall of 11.1% at 17, with 16 of them being males, the report says. The drop in fatalities among male and female expatriates was pegged at 10.6% and 14.3% respectively in March.
