The National Centre for Statistics and Information's (NCSI's) board of directors held its third meeting this year on Tuesday 1/9/2015 under the chairmanship of His Excellency Sultan bin Salem Al-Habsi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Planning and the Board Chairman of NCSI in the presence of the board members. Some topics listed on the agenda including approving the minutes of the second meeting have been discussed. The report of NCSI's chief executive officer that includes the achievements and works done by the Centre during the third quarter of the current year has been reviewed. The most notable achievement mentioned in this report is winning the special achievement award for spatial application techniques by the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the NCSI during the International Conference for Users of Geographical Information Systems held at San Diego City in the United States of America. This award is granted to the authorities that achieve the best use of the geographic information systems worldwide to serve the local communities and citizens in their countries. It is also granted to the authorities and individuals who highlight the importance and strength of geographical information in building a better world for living and working. The best services and spatial applications for geographic information systems in the fields of economic development, agriculture, climate changes, security, public safety, education, health, tourism, telecommunications, electricity, water and governmental facilities management, as well as the human and community services. The report has also addressed the surveys and polls carried out by the Centre during the first quarter of the current year and the surveys that are being conducted like the inventory of Khareef Salalah visitors and the comprehensive family survey. The meeting discussed also the information portal of the Centre that witnessed a development in the quality of provided services in all statistical and information respects. In addition, it discussed the topic of building statistical capacities for the persons working in the statistical field. The meeting highlighted the efforts exerted by the NCSI to help the statisticians and the persons working in the field of statistics acquire the necessary skills and knowledge that enable them to perform the tasks assigned to them in the best way. It also reviewed the first draft of the Statistics and Information Law that would be the legal reference of statistical practices in the Sultanate. This law would ease the task of the persons who are concerned with the statistical field in getting the statistics that are necessary for development. In addition, it would serve as a guarantee for protecting the confidentiality of private data for individuals or establishments and ensure that such data will not be used for any purposes other than the statistical purposes. The meeting has also discussed some other topics listed on the agenda and the appropriate decisions have been taken with their regard.
