The Sultanate had a total of 2518 registered industrial establishments in 2014, with a majority of them being limited liability companies (878) and sole ownership firms (823). Total investments in industrial firms stood at OMR 24.42 billion in the same year. There were also 308 limited liability companies subject to foreign ownership, according to the Statistical Year Book 2015. There were 88 joint stock companies of which six were subject to foreign ownership, while closed joint stock companies numbered 38, with 11 of them subject to foreign investment. General partnership and limited partnership companies were reported to be 210 and 171, while two companies operated as branches of foreign firms in the year 2014. In 2013 the total number of industrial establishments stood at 2350, with total investments at OMR 23.49 billion. The figures exclude tailoring shops, smithery and carpentry workshops, manual block plants and industrial establishments with capital of less than OMR 5000. Going by industrial activities, there were 454 food, beverages and tobacco industries, followed by 330 industries dealing in chemicals and allied products as well as petroleum and coal. They had investments of OMR 441.47 million and 5.97 billion respectively. Spinning, Weaving, Finishing, Textiles and Leather companies numbered 82 with total investments running to OMR 182.71 million, while wood industries numbered 164 with total investments of OMR 105.71 million. Paper, printing and publishing firms totaled 121 with investments worth OMR 119.41 million. There were 65 industries in non-metallic mineral products (OMR 2.11 billion investments) and 71 basic metal industries, while the number of fabricated metal products industries stood at 321 with total investment of OMR 2.90 billion. Other manufacturing industries numbered 910 with total investments of OMR 10.47 billion. The majority of industrial establishments were in Muscat governorate at 771, while al Batinah North had 676, with respective investment figures of OMR 6.79 billion and 12.92 billion. Dhofar came third with 231 industries with total investments exceeding OMR 2.38 billion. Al Wusta had the least number of industries at 15, while Musandam had 17. Al Buraymi had 166, and Ad Dhakhliyah 184. Registered industrial firms in Al Batinah South stood at 16, while Sharqiyah North and South had 93 and 145 respectively. Ad Dhahirah had 54 industrial firms.
